A Solar City

I was sent this very cool websiteyesterday and thought I’d pass it along to you.  In southwest Florida they are building a solar city called Babcock Ranch.  Babcock Ranch will be the first city to provide for its energy needs from the sun via the largest solar photovoltaic energy facility generating system powering any city in the world.    The solar energy facilities release zero greenhouse gas emissions, have zero use of cooling water, and this source of energy is virtually inexhaustible. Very cool!

Babcock Ranch is located near Ft Myers, Florida on over 17,000 acres of land.  This community will be built with nature preserves, charter schools, fitness center, city wide wi-fi and lots of other cool ideas.  All the homes and businesses will be on a smart grid to maximize energy efficiency. They are attracting businesses with promises of healthier, happier employees, off set costs by leasing rooftops for solar energy, and storm-ready building materials. One article I read says no significant building until 2011 but if this idea is successful, I would love to see it catch on- probably on a smaller scale all over the country.

Today I am participating on a Hooked on Fridays Blog Party over at HookedonHouses.net.  Go check it out to see what everyone is hooked on today!

Oh, I read about this! The “creator” is a former NFL player that got into real estate after playing. I think this is fascinating!!

I know, I thought that was cool too. He said that people thought he’d been hit in the head a few too many times in the NFL when he started this new project 🙂

This is a great idea. Hope it all works out as planned. And if it does, it’ll hopefully encourage people to build more communities like it.

Thanks for checking out my Hooked on Fridays post 🙂 A chocolate headboard wouldn’t be very practical — but at least you wouldn’t have to go very far to satisfy late night snack cravings!! 😉
